Our Private Cinema is a transformation of the content of Eyescape (2008) using a comparative grid format.
Gallery Proposal
In a gallery, several projections of eyes simultaneously listening to the same audio story would be shown side-by-side, or in a grid. The audio reading can be heard while viewing the projected eyes of those listening along with you. The audio is simulcast by speakers or headphones to visitors. This project would operate similarly to the drive-in proposal, in an urban setting.
Drive-In Proposal
Drive-in movie theaters would be an opportunity to engage rural Minnesota communities. Recordings of local volunteers’ eyes would be collected at a location in the community (e.g. library, art center, town hall). Then, on an evening arranged with the local drive-in theater, a grid of nine of their recorded eyes, alongside strangers from the Twin Cities metro area, would be projected. The viewing audience would listen to a simulcast of the audio story.
The amazing consequence of this public project is that it is a rare opportunity to stare into the eyes of your friends, neighbors, and strangers, and to wonder “What are they thinking? Why are they laughing? Why are they crying? How are they different from me?”
