Hats

Concept

Hats are complex carriers of information.  They can convey the attitude, class, culture, profession, religion and even political disposition of the wearer (think MAGA hats).  How and when they are worn, their color, size and form – all contribute to their message.  This project explores 26 hat options and the attendant films (2) projects the artists’ attitudes when wearing each hat.  The background and face/hair coloration are meant to neutralize the wearer’s facial features yet retain the expressive power of their eyes.  This color scheme was intended to be grey but the olive color (or any other color) meets the artist’s conceptual need.

Hats  was initially intended as a project representing the letter “H” in an Encyclopedia of Art – a project jointly conceived and executed with the late Bernhard Huwiler (1957-20).  Other artworks for this “encyclopedia” included D is for Drawing, The Book of Icons, The Book of Satellite Love and The Book of Toys.
